How much weight can I lose?

Research has shown that people lose an average of 14.9% of their body weight in 68 weeks on Wegovy.

In a double-blind trial the mean change in body weight from baseline to week 68 was -14.9% in the semaglutide (Wegovy) group as compared with -2.4% with placebo. 2.4 mg of semaglutide once weekly plus lifestyle intervention was associated with sustained, clinically relevant reduction in body weight.

How do I take Wegovy?

Wegovy is a weekly injection administered with a gradual dosage escalation

Patients start with a 0.25mg once-weekly dose for the initial 4 weeks, progressively advancing until they reach the maintenance dose of 2.4 mg once weekly starting from week 17 onwards. This incremental adjustment is crucial as it mitigates the likelihood of side effects. If any side effects occur, they are predominantly encountered during the dose escalation phase and typically reduce over time.

How does Wegovy work?

Wegovy regulates appetite, cuts cravings, and reduces calories consumed

Wegovy's active ingredient, semaglutide, is categorised as a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It mimics a hormone naturally produced by the body called glucagon like peptide 1 (GLP-1). This hormone plays a pivotal role in appetite regulation, influencing the sensation of fullness.

By replicating this hormone, Wegovy targets receptors in the brain responsible for appetite control. This induces a heightened feeling of fullness and a reduced sense of hunger, diminishing cravings for food. When integrated with a calorie-controlled diet and increased physical activity, this approach facilitates effective weight loss.

FAQs

Any questions? We’ve got the answers

Is Wegovy available in the UK?

Wegovy has been approved for weight loss and weight management in the UK. However, you need to meet eligibility criteria and obtain a prescription in order to buy Wegovy in the UK as it is not available over the counter.

How does it work?

Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy pens of all strengths, is in a category of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists. In short, GLP-1 medications mimic a natural hormone that makes you feel fuller for longer, experience fewer cravings, and ultimately consume fewer calories.

Wegovy is intended to be used alongside a healthy, balanced diet and increased physical activity. This combination has been shown to lead to significant weight loss in many research trials, as well as in the real world over the last few years. At Habitual we've helped thousands of patients achieve and sustain weight loss through the use of Wegovy and our app-based behavioural coaching.

How do I take Wegovy?

Wegovy is administered with a gradual dosage escalation over a 16-week period. Patients start with a 0.25mg once-weekly dose for the initial 4 weeks, progressively advancing until they reach the maintenance dose of 2.4 mg once weekly starting from week 17 onwards. This incremental adjustment is crucial as it mitigates the likelihood of side effects. If any side effects occur, they are predominantly encountered during the dose-escalation phase and typically reduce over time

Is Wegovy different to Ozempic?

Wegovy shares the exact active ingredient as Ozempic and is manufactured by the same company. The primary distinction lies in their respective licenses: Ozempic is approved for diabetes, whereas Wegovy is specifically licensed in the UK for weight loss. In addition, Wegovy is available in two higher strengths than Ozempic, 1.7mg and 2.4mg.

What are the side effects?

As with any medication, it's essential to be aware of potential side effects before starting a new treatment. The most commonly reported side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Indigestion
  • Reflux or heartburn
  • Stomach pain and bloating

If you find these side effects challenging to manage, it's crucial to inform your prescriber and consider discontinuing treatment. Although Wegovy is generally considered very safe, individual reactions can vary.

Side effects of Wegovy are often more noticeable with dosage increases but typically diminish within a few days. Should you experience unexpected or challenging side effects, please consult your GP for guidance on the best course of action.

Who is Wegovy safe for?

Wegovy is prescribed as a weight-loss treatment for individuals with a BMI over 30 or a BMI over 27 with weight-related conditions such as high blood pressure. It is recommended for use in conjunction with a calorie-restricted diet and increased physical exercise to support weight loss.

Who should not take Wegovy?

Wegovy is unsuitable for:

  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding; treatment should be ceased at least two months before attempting to conceive.
  • Individuals with BMIs outside the suitable range.
  • Those taking specific medications.
  • Individuals with a history of certain conditions, such as pancreatitis.
  • Those with type 1 diabetes.
  • Individuals who have previously discontinued GLP-1 treatment due to side effects.

Please be aware that this list is not exhaustive, and each patient should undergo an individual assessment by a licensed prescriber.

Can I take Wegovy if I am pregnant?

This medicine should not be used during pregnancy. It is strongly recommended to use contraception while on this medication. If you are planning to become pregnant, it is advised to discontinue this medication at least two months before attempting to conceive. In the event of pregnancy, suspicion of pregnancy, or plans to conceive while using this medication, it is crucial to promptly consult with your doctor, as the treatment may need to be halted.

Additionally, this medication should not be used while breastfeeding, as its passage into breast milk is uncertain.

What do I eat whilst on Wegovy?

For optimal effectiveness, it is advisable to complement your prescription with a nutritious diet and consistent exercise. Include lots of lean proteins, healthy fats, non-starchy vegetables, and high-fibre carbohydrates. Aim to restrict the intake of sugary foods, fried items, refined carbohydrates, and alcohol.

Can you buy Wegovy online in the UK?

Wegovy can be purchased online, in the UK but it is not available over-the-counter. You will need to go through a reputable healthcare provider and meet NICE eligibility criteria to obtain a prescription. Your healthcare provider will conduct an online assessment and decide the most suitable treatment plan for you, which may or may not include a Wegovy prescription.
